The Podcast

Season 7 is almost here so I thought I would write a little bit about my podcast, Did You Bring the Hummus. If you'd like to know the origin of the name or how the podcast itself came to be you can read about that here.

First, wow, I just wrote the words season 7 in the opening sentence of this blog, I can barely wrap my head around it! I really had no idea I would have so much to say nor did I anticipate interviewing some of the most inspiring people I've ever had the chance to meet.

Putting yourself out there in this way, with your voice, thoughts, and questions preserved forever on the internet can be really scary and it brings up those feelings of ineptitude quite often. It also is exhilarating and pushes me to reach out to that guest I'm not sure will respond or to cover a challenging topic.

The first book I read after going vegetarian in 2001 was Animal Liberation by Peter Singer. A significant work in the modern animal rights movement, it had a profound effect on me. A few years later I was working at a hotel about 5 minutes from Princeton University, where he was teaching and got to talking with one of the hotel guests. She mentioned that she was a visiting professor and could connect me to Peter so I could sit in on one of his classes. She did, and he said yes, and I never went! Then, in 2023 I had the chance to meet Peter when he was speaking at the Farm Days event at Ethos Farm to Health. While he was poised to sign my copy of Animal Liberation Now I told him about my podcast. He said that was great, then he wrote about being glad to know my podcast exists in the book. Then I asked him if he would join me as a guest and he said yes. This time, dear readers, I followed through. You can listen to my chat with Peter here.

I feel so lucky to have had the opportunities to have meaningful one on one conversations with people who are doing incredible work, whether they reach many as Peter Singer and others have or if their work is on a smaller scale. The movement doesn't move forward without people working on and in it every day.

I am always striving to be better, to ask better questions, to dig in deeper with my guests, to talk about topics that make people uncomfortable, to address what is going on in the world overall and where veganism fits into it all. I am working to better understand the tech I use to improve the sound quality, I am still a one-woman show and I've been slower In picking up the tech piece than I would have liked. I want Did You Bring the Hummus to be a top vegan podcast. I hope that through this commitment that I am or am becoming a trusted voice within the movement, both by those already in it and by those looking in.

As all good podcasts do, my show follows a bit of a formula. Each interview opens with the guest's vegan journey. We start here for one reason, story telling is powerful, seeing ourselves in others helps inspire change. For some, veganism seems impossible for a myriad of reasons but if they have the change to hear someone's story and see themselves in that person who has gone vegan, now, we've shown them possibility.

The final question I ask is always about hummus. You might think that there can't possibly be that much to be said about this humble dip of blended chickpeas but I can tell you, I have never heard the same story twice and there are currently 124 published episodes.

Between those two questions we chat about all kinds of things, focuses on the expertise of the guest or even just something related to animal rights/veganism that is weighing on them or important. The only requirement to be a guest is to be vegan. You don't need a business, you don't need a certain number of followers, or name recognition (though, of course you'll see I do have guests who have those things, they are welcome too). You just need a willingness to tell your story.

The release date for Season 7 is coming soon. I cannot wait for you to see the guests lined up for this season!!

I love how the podcast comes across as a conversation, not a production—curious, welcoming, and real. It sounds like a space where people can show up as they are and leave feeling a little more seen.

Looking forward to hearing how these conversations unfold.
