World Vegan Day was first celebrated on November 1, 1994 to commemorate The Vegan Society’s 50th anniversary, November is World Vegan Month. The Vegan Society was formed in 1944 by Donald Watson, who, along with fellow group members actually coined the term “vegan.” It started as a way to shorten what they and many people like them were calling themselves - “nondairy vegetarians,” this new word truly captured their lifestyle as they were not consuming, using, or exploiting animals. Vegan is simply the first three and last two letters of ‘vegetarian’.
As defined by The Vegan Society, “Vegan is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.” - The Vegan Society
So, in honor of World Vegan Day and Month, I challenge the vegans to share their beautiful vegan lives and show the world how amazing this life is. My challenge to the non-vegans is to make small changes each day. Maybe today, you you have your coffee black or try it with a plant-milk, if you run out of shampoo this month, find a cruelty free and vegan version.
If you would like to hear more on this, check out the podcast I posted today. Did You Bring the Hummus is available on your favorite podcast app, and right here on my website.
In totally transparency, this topic would simply have been a podcast, not a blog as well, but, I’m partaking in another Ultimate Blog Challenge (see my post in August) and I thought this would be a great way to kick off a month of blogging. Please comment and share this post!
Let me know in the comments how you are celebrating World Vegan Day, will you take up the challenge and make small changes this month? If yes, what is your plan for tomorrow?
