Vegan January or Veganuary...

Veganuary began in 2014 as a way to help people embark on their vegan journey during a time when lots of people are making resolutions to make big changes in their lives but so often do not have the support they need to succeed.

Think about previous resolutions or goals you've set but then didn't achieve. Maybe what was missing was the support, not just someone cheering you on but someone showing you how to do it, the tricks to make things easier, or even just saving you hours of research to understand how it's done. If you had someone like that in your corner this time, do you think you would succeed? I do.

Veganuary offers an easy path into discovering veganism offering quick emails each day along with a fun celebrity e-cookbook providing inspiration and practical tips in easy to digest formats. You can go at your own pace and make changes as you see them fitting into your life.

Sometimes, people learn information about the animal agriculture system and go vegan right then and there. They immediately seek out only vegan foods, items, concepts, and begin learning how to live within the decision they've just made (this is actually how I went vegetarian - I made the decision and figured it out after, because I had to.) Others will take a more segmented approach by learning and then make changes.

Kimberly, great to see you again, How have you been? Happy new year! Having structure and support really can make a big difference when trying something new, especially with lifestyle changes. It’s interesting to see how Veganuary is designed to ease people into it.

Hi Tamara, it's great to see you again too! I am doing well, how about you? Happy New Year!!

Agreed on structure and support, I also like to remind everyone that this is new, so there is learning to be done and that is to be expected, I think that helps avoid feeling like a failure as we embark on new things.

I agree! There's always hope when there is hummus! LOL! Love your guidance to either dipping your toe into veganism or jumping right in for more urgent reasons. Thanks for all you do!

When making any kind of change it is important to have support, especially with changing eating habits as many try to go all in and loose the battle because they take on too much all at once. Veganuary is a great way for you and Jennifer to provide support to those looking to become vegan. Since you have been doing Veganuary since 2014 what is your number one tip for someone looking to transition their diet?

My number one tip is actually what I just wrote in response to Tamara's comment above, remember that you are learning, it's okay to make mistakes, it's definitely okay to not know something. That's why people like me and Jen supplement the Veganuary event with smaller groups so we can provide that support that allows someone to be new at it and still feel like they are moving forward.

For diet specifically, start by recognizing what you eat right now that is or could be veganized. For example, a simple pasta with marinara is typically vegan or easily made vegan by swapping pasta which contains eggs with one that does not. Morning oatmeal - swap cow's milk for a new…
