What happens when you combine a deep love for the natural world, a Ph.D. in microbiology, and a passion for holistic wellness?
You get Dr. Marina De León—this week’s inspiring guest on Did You Bring the Hummus.
Meet Dr. Marina De León
From her bio: Marina De León does two things well; wildlife conservation and holistic nutrition. Her work bridges disease ecology, molecular biology, and microbiome research to address environmental and ecological challenges. With a Ph.D. in Microbiology from UC Davis, Marina specializes in herpetology focusing on disease ecology, toxin-producing microbes, and conservation strategies for endangered species.
In addition to her work in conservation biology, Marina runs a private nutrition consulting practice focused on gut microbiome health. Drawing from her deep expertise in microbiology, she helps clients understand and optimize their gut health through personalized, evidence-based nutrition plans. Marina’s holistic, plant-based approach emphasizes the necessity of a diverse and resilient microbiome in both environmental and human health, grounded in her understanding that that well-being begins at the microbial level.
“Nutrition is not isolated—it’s deeply connected to the ecosystems we depend on.”
This conversation moves seamlessly between the invisible worlds of microbes and the very tangible impact of human activity on the planet. But don’t worry—it’s not just for scientists!
It’s about relationships—with our food, our bodies, and the Earth.
We also dig into the idea of community, we talk about where we both feel community is a bonus, not a necessity, and where I and others find community to be incredibly meaningful.
Where does community mean the most to you? Are there areas of your life that would change and maybe even stop being part of your life if the community around it went away? Of all of the things Marina and I discussed, this is the most pressing question for us both! Let me know in the comments!
Why This Episode Matters
In a time of ecological crisis, social burnout, and disconnection from the natural world, voices like Dr. De León’s are essential.
She brings compassion and clarity to some of today’s most pressing issues, showing us that science doesn’t have to be cold, and wellness doesn’t have to be fluffy. It’s all connected.
Whether you're new to veganism, passionate about planetary health, or simply exploring more intentional ways of living—this episode will inspire and empower you.
Ready to Tune In?
This conversation is full of insight, laughter, and a refreshing reminder that you don’t have to choose between intellect and heart—you can live in both.
