We're 7 days into Veganuary, what questions are coming up for you?

Are you wondering about protein? Iron? Calcium? Omegas?

Here's a fun video from nutritionist Callum Weir on all of these things (listen to him on Did You Bring the Hummus here and visit his website here.)

I've been vegan for 10 years, went vegetarian more than 24 years ago, but, I am not a nutritionist, so I am always going to point you to resources who are trained and experts in that field to guide you.

You might also want to check out NutritionFacts.org, From the website: NutritionFacts is a science-based nonprofit charity committed to bringing the medical literature to you, breaking down the latest in evidence-based nutrition research, and presenting the results in ways that are easy to understand. My why for going vegetarian and then vegan has always been for the animals. Any health benefits that come from living this way are solely extra perks. It is enough for me to know that I am doing whatever I can to remove myself from the systems that exist to harm animals.

Veganism Is so much more than what we eat, for example, another way vegans make changes In their lives to stop harming animals Is through the products we buy. We buy products that are cruelty free and vegan. Read more about this and find some great resources in my World Day for Laboratory Animals blog here.

We don't go to circuses (except maybe Cirque du Soleil) or swim with dolphins. We don't wear wool or fur or leather. We don't buy our animal companions (if we live with any at all.)

Enough about what we don't do...what we do is live abundant lives in alignment with our values, working to end the exploitation of animals everywhere which in turn helps the planet, and helps us.

Sometimes, it's hard to believe that this change can change everything but it can, and it will as more and more people make the same choice.

So, what questions about veganism do you have so far? Tell me in the comments below.

Interesting what Callum says. Here's my dilemna though: It’s true that the body needs amino acids, not “protein” as a concept — but amino acids are delivered via food with calories attached.

One protein portion equals ~150 g salmon (~280 kcal) or ~750 g quinoa (~850 kcal). With 1,400–1,600 kcal/day, those choices have very different consequences.

Hi Tamara, I appreciate the question. I'm not a nutritionist but here are my thoughts and I'll share some links as well to people who have that background should you or anyone reading this wish to dive in a bit deeper.

I wouldn't say it is common to eat 750 grams (4 cups) of quinoa in one meal. Such "swaps" are not always 1:1. I would say a standard quinoa bowl would include a cup of quinoa also include some tofu, maybe some beans, a variety of veggies, possibly a sprinkling of nutes or seeds. It's not important to get all 9 amino acids in every meal, eating a varied diet will get you there week over week It is…

Taking action for what we believe is a core part of what makes us humans! So nice to see you stand up and speak your truth.
