Jalen Brunson's Bodega order but make it vegan

basketball hoop and net with lights in the background

During the MNBA Finals Jalen Brunson (Captain Clutch) was asked about his bodega order. For those who don't know, bodega's are small neighborhood shops much like other convenience stores around the country but they are also their own special kind of store. Here's a deep dive on bodegas: What Is a bodega?

Here's what he said:

I was so excited because his order is simple and incredibly easy to veganize.

What you'll need:

Hashbrowns

Everything bagel

Vegan egg substitute (I cooked the pourable Just Egg In a pan but the folded Just Egg would work here too. Learn more here)

Vegan American Cheese (I used Follow Your Heart)

Spicy mayo (I added sriracha to my Hellman's vegan mayo)

Purple Doritos (Spicy Sweet Chili, yup, they're vegan!!)

Peach Snapple

Follow the Instructions on the package of the hash browns and egg substitute. Toast your bagel.

Spread spicy mayo on the bagel then layer with the hash brown, the egg, top with cheese.

Hashbrowns, carton of Just Egg, and a package of Follow Your Heart vegan American cheese on a white granite counter.

vegan egg and cheese on an everything bagel on a white plate with a bag of chips and bottle of iced tea in the background
The bagel was mid, please don't judge New Jersey bagels by this one, it is an outlier

The bagel definitely needed a good toasting and I still prefer SPK (saltpepperketchup, yes, that Is one word) over spicy mayo on my bagel sandwich but this was enjoyable. I do love hash browns on my egg and cheese.

In the comments, tell me a food you'd like to see me veganize, It just might become a future blog!

I always enjoy learning about foods that are popular in different parts of the country, and this was a fun read. It's interesting to see how you adapted the sandwich to fit your lifestyle, and I appreciated the little explanation about what makes a bodega special.

Love this! Go Knicks! It is so easy to veganize our favorite foods! I love how you use this example! Those purple Doritos are the best! 😋

Love your veganized bodega order! You have made me hungry - can you make me breakfast right now? LOL! I am now a Knicks fan! I have never watched a full basketball game in my life. But I watched the last Knicks game from beginning to end, screaming my head off! It was one of the most amazing sporting events I have ever seen in my life. And that it was a NYC team is all the more for the screams. And the fact that there is so much joy, happiness and love in NYC right now is the cherry on the top. Now off to see if I can recreate your vegan breakfast idea....😍

Yes! Come on over! lol

Welcome to the club!! That game has me screaming too (after some very quiet and tense moments early on). You are so right, the vibes are just incredible right now, NYC is the place to be (or on the outskirts, I'm feeling the goodness out here in Jersey too) 💚

I'd love for you to share a pic of your bagel and/or tell me how it comes out!

Kimberly - As you know, I am not a Knicks fan (blasphemy?) and not really a b-ball follower, but a vegan bodega sandwich I can absolutely get behind (esp if I cannot tell the difference!). The idea of veganizing a celebrity's go-to order is exactly the kind of content that makes food blogging fun - and when it is YOUR wheelhouse - yeah! You got me over to soy milk... Time to try the Plant Eggs. I appreciate the honest review too, because a mediocre bagel is a mediocre bagel regardless of what's on it.

hahah, I suppose that I can look past your lack of interest in any of the sports I enjoy 🤣

Awesome! I look forward to hearing your take on the plant eggs. There are a couple of brands out there but Just Egg is the only one I can easily and consistently find in stores. I've made a frittata with it too which was SO good! ooo, new blog idea!

OMG. A hashbrown ON a bagel! So, confession time. My daughter is allergic to wheat so we've cut way back on our bread consumption and sometimes I'll make an egg sandwich with hashbrowns as the "bread." :)
