What about a word or theme of the year instead?
I've written about this in the past, but, I don't do resolutions. Any time I've done them they've either been too big so I was immediately overwhelmed or they were too vague so I had no idea where to start even though It was my Idea!
Finding your word:
Check out previous word of the year focused blogs with some guidance on how to find your word:
So much talk around resolutions or themes of the year focus on what you want to do in the next year, it's very action focused. Sometimes though, we hit a phase in our life when we really need or are seeking more peace, less doing and more being, if that's where you are going into 2026, don't shy away from the word that comes to you suggesting such an approach. Honor what you truly need and want and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised how that can change your life.
Okay, I have my word, what now?
Spend some time writing about what that word means to you, how it makes you feel, what you want most out of the year and how focusing on this word will keep those feelings front and center in your life.
When a decision needs to be made, ask yourself, does this honor the word/bring more of it to me...etc..it's a simple way to keep you on track.
Post your word in places you'll see it daily, write it in your planner, on your notebooks, your desk, in your car, make a wallpaper for your phone/laptop with the word or imagery that reminds you of your goal for the year. Journal about it whenever you feel disconnected or you want to deepen your commitment.
My word for 2026
Mastery - In 2026 I plan to dig in deeper and level up my skills in various areas of my life both personally and professionally. I also have a few outstanding trainings that I plan to finish this year which speak to this goal of mastery. Of course, mastery is a life-long process but having this word as my focus will remind me each day to keep going when something feels beyond me, especially if it feels really scary to take on.
I'm excited to share my progress towards mastery with you and I hope you'll do the same with your word throughout the year! Comment below with the word you've chosen for 2026 and let's support each other!
Check out the That Vegan Morning Show Season 1 Finale where Jen and I talk about choosing a word of the year:
If you are looking for more personal Veganuary support, there is still time to join me and my morning show co-host (and fellow UBCer) Jennifer Shlomovich in our Veganuary container. Click here to learn more and to sign up. We kick off on Tuesday, January 6th.

“Mastery” sounds like a great guiding theme for 2026—looking forward to seeing how it unfolds for you.
Like you, Kimberly, I've chosen & written about a Word of the Year for awhile now! And some vision boards other years.
This year, a bit into my SoulCollage facilitator training, I'll lead a couple of WotY processes, letting the IMAGES inform our choices!
Last year, after we invited our images to speak, my Scribe partner commented his word would NEVER have come to him using the dictionary/ Thesaurus process we'd done with Kathleen in previous years! He's much more linear, so the creative process was less comfortable - but he embraced it!
The facilitator training begins tomorrow, and I'm super excited!
